| COMPANY HISTORY Singer, for all intents and purposes invented the sewing machine. Isaac
Merritt Singer
succeeded where others had failed. He was able to create the first practical sewing
machine. In only 11 days, Singer manufactured his machine (which he named the Jenny
Lind) and was granted a patent a year later.
As the company grew, it developed mass production techniques far in
advance of Henry
Ford, and in 1908 its headquarters in New York City was the tallest building in town,
a staggering 47 stories!
When electricity became available in the early 1930s, Singer
was ready with new machines that made the job easier. Zig-zag stitches, drop-in
bobbins, and the legendary
Touch & Sew are all Singer creations.
Practically every innovation in sewing machines today can be
credited to Singers ongoing quest to innovate the category. In 1975, Singer
pioneered the first electronic
sewing machine, leading to todays computerized product. The
company also developed the first home embroidery machine thats fueling a
new home-based business opportunity for thousands of homemakers
